ESI ePhone4x User Guide (Persona Connect)

Overview
The ePhone4x has a 4.3" color display and up to 45 programmable feature keys, arranged across 5 pages of 9 keys, along the left and right sides of the screen. When the phone is idle, the Home Screen shows the date/time and any new voicemail message counts. The four keys along the bottom row of the display are soft keys, and their function changes depending on what's shown on screen.
Getting Started
Placing an External Call
- Lift the handset, or press the Speaker key or Headset key.
- Enter the phone number and press # or the Dial soft key to dial immediately (or wait for the phone to send the number automatically).
- To end the call, press End, replace the handset, or press Speaker / Headset.
Answering a Call
- Lift the handset, press the Speaker key or Headset key, or press the Answer soft key.
- To decline the call instead, press the Reject soft key.
Adjust Phone Preferences
Press the Menu soft key, scroll to and select Basic. From there, you can configure screen settings, ring settings, voice volume, and more.
Call Management
Hold
While on an active call, press the Hold key. The key becomes a Resume key — press it again to pick the call back up.
Connecting to a Second Inbound Call
If you receive a second call while on an active call, the display splits and you'll hear a call waiting tone.
- Press the ringing line key, or press the Answer soft key.
Your first call is placed on hold automatically. To switch back to it:
- Use the up/down navigation keys to select the other call, then press the Resume soft key.
Call Transfer
- While on an active call, press the Transfer key or Xfer soft key.
- Dial the number to transfer to (or press a programmed feature key assigned to the destination).
- For a blind transfer, press the Transfer key or Xfer soft key again, then hang up. The call transfers immediately, before the other side answers.
- For a supervised (attended) transfer, wait for the destination to answer. After confirming they'll take the call, press the Transfer key or Xfer soft key, then hang up.
Note: Some keys mentioned in this guide may need to be assigned to a programmable feature key. Contact your System Administrator for assistance.
Key System Features
Three-Way Conference
- Call the first participant. When connected, press the Conference key (the first caller is placed on hold).
- Call the second participant. When they answer, press the Conference key again to join all three participants (including you).
- To end the conference call, hang up or press the End soft key.

Call Forwarding
- Press Menu > Features > Call Forward.
- Select the line and the forward type — unconditional forwards every call, busy forwards calls when you're already on the phone, and no answer forwards calls you don't pick up in time.
- Toggle to Enabled, enter the destination number, then save.
To disable call forwarding, return to the same menu, select Disabled, then save.
Call Park
Call Park places a call in a holding state that can be picked up from any phone on the system.
- Press the configured Park key to park the call.
- To retrieve the parked call, press the Park key again, or dial the park slot number given to you by your System Administrator.
Mute & Do Not Disturb (DND)
- Mute: While on a call, press the Mute key to disable outbound audio through the microphone. Press Mute again to turn it off. (Mute automatically disables when you hang up.)
- DND: Press the configured DND key, or go to Menu > Features > DND, select a line, and press OK. Incoming calls go straight to voicemail. Repeat to disable.
Voicemail
- Press the Voice Mail key.
- Use the up/down navigation keys to select the line, then press Play.
- At the prompt, enter your password, then press #.
Follow the prompts to repeat, forward, delete, reply, hear the next message, or save.

Note: A missed calls icon appears on the Home screen with the number of missed calls.
Recording
Call recording on the ePhone4x needs to be set up first — check with your System Administrator to confirm recording is configured for your line.
- Once recording is set up and a key is assigned, start a recording during a call by pressing the configured Record key.
- End the recording by pressing the Record key again or by hanging up.
Redial
- Press the Redial key to dial the last outgoing number.
Phonebook
- Press the Contacts key or Contact soft key, or go to Menu > Phonebook > Local Contacts.
Status Indicator
Programmed feature keys flash to indicate a new incoming call or new voicemail message. The key stays lit red during an active call and flashes yellow when a call is on hold.
Troubleshooting
- I can't transfer / park / record: Those features may require a key assignment. Contact your System Administrator.
- Calls are going straight to voicemail: Check whether DND is enabled and disable it if needed.
- Voicemail won't play: Verify you selected the correct line and entered the correct voicemail password.
- No audio or poor audio in the handset: Confirm the handset cord is plugged into the handset port, not the headset port.
- Audio is choppy in speakerphone mode: This is usually feedback from the speaker into the microphone. Lower the speaker volume until it clears up.
